If I were to create a questionaire for my students concerning the use of Ebooks in the class, and whether they would prefer this method over the usual hardback book, majority would probably agree that its use would be a strong acceptance. My students would see the use of an Ebook as a new and everchanging step towards ‘cool’ and convenient, whereas I may easily differ.

The use of Ebooks in my class would be quite helpful to eliminate the staggering mounds of paper and the costly and time smothering hours of copying English and reading/writing materials. It is sad to think that one of the main uses of Ebooks is to provide each student with an opportunity to obtain the latest edition of a reading assignment, rather than the method of hard copy eliminations.

If given the opportunity, Ebooks would be widely used in order to press forward with n0t only technology innovations, but the ability to ensure the knowledge of reading through the use of technology. I would definitely allow students to read whatever novel is covered within my lessons, research without being mobile, and gain a greater appreciation for technology and the everchanging trend.

Being able to point my students in the direction of research, reading and browsing without worrying about obtaining enough copies, would be wonderful.

Some helpful sites that offer Ebook materials are: gutenberg.org, ebooks.com, drscavanaugh.org/ebooks and even the busyeducator.com if you are willing to take the necessary time to read, search and purchase.

It’s only two days into the new week and already I have allowed the advancement of technology to take its monstrous hands and grab hold of my nerves. Whew! I just don’t understand how I am supposed to play teacher, mother, role model, technician, comforter, friend etc., all in the same day. Who does this? I am sure I am not the only one, but this week already, has me feeling like I am the only one teaching, learning, smiling, sweating, speaking, laughing, crying, and complaining. Man oh’ Man. I am supposed to speak of what I have learned this previous week, but all I continue to come up with is “FRUSTRATION.”

Are standards important when seeking to measure a goal? Are they neccessary to achieve the goals that one seeks to achieve? Well, when teaching, one must be able to follow a guideline that may assist with teacher gain and student achievement. After browsing through the Alabama Technology Standards for teachers and students the two that I could most relate to as student and teacher were:

42(4)(d) (viii)- Design, manage, and facilitate learning experiences incorporating technologies that are responsive to the diverse needs of learners, learning styles and the special needs of all students (e.g., assistive technologies for students with special needs).

As a teacher, it is important to be able to maneuver throughout the course of each lesson and identify with all learners, on all levels, in all settings. Regardless of whether a student is classified as “special needs learner” or not, it is imperative that as an educator, students feel comfortable and are given every opportunity to learn. The 21st Century embarks on innovative technology and tools that encourage advanced and creative learning experiences. As educators, we must find what works for each of our students and apply our expertise to enlightening their creative minds through technology.

42(4)(d)1(x)- The resources for enhancing professional growth using technology (for example, through assessing web-based information, on-line collaboration with other educators and experts, and on-line professional courses).

Though this standard applies to professional growth of a type, all individuals, regardless of education status, professional field, career choice, or personal choice has an opportunity to gain knowledge of technology and the changes within the field. The emergence of technology occurs often and it is for the benefit of most to become aware of the changes because most aspects of current society involves many aspects of technology. Whether learning how to use a computer, digital camera, mouse, keyboard, Ipod, MP3 player, projector, television, DVR player, digital clock, timer, ATM, blackboard, smart-board etc., the advancement is necessary to succeed in an ever-changing world. Why get left behind when there are so many avenues that lead to technology. Having the know-how is great, finding ways to use what you know is greater!

Ummmmm? Please wait as I think…now as I browse….

After extensive and tedious research, though helpful, I was able to distinguish between the various desktops, notebooks and even the latest software available. The process of browsing many pages and reading “blah, blah” of so many sites who are fortunate to have technical writers, was tiring. I was also unaware of the selection choices and brands offered by various companies. It is amazing how many selections are available to consumers. Whether one is willing to spend major bucks or a make a small investment, there is a computer out there to suit your every need. Technologically speaking that is!

If I were given an opportunity to purchase a computer system, I would definitely go with the Portege R500-S5001X - Toshiba Laptop. This particular system offers so many features that I could see myself to be pleased with purchasing. Some of the features include, but are not limited to:

1. 12” screen- though a 19” screen would be my preference

2. spill drop and shock resistance

3. wireless and bluetooth capabilities

4. built-in microphone and head phone

5. 8.18 battery life (Well-needed for those long trips from Alabama to California and Arizona).

6. 3 USB ports for times when I have a printer, digital camera and jump drive working at the same time.

7. 3 year warranty and 1 year warranty on the battery

8. finger print identification system (NOW THIS IS CLEVER)

9. Office ready/instant Office

10. I would also include a custom skin with photo uploader to change the cover whenever I choose. I could have a skin with my family everywhere I go.

11. Lightweight @ 2.41lbs

These are a few of the adds associated with the Portege R500 that I would be most interested in using. My use of technology is not too complex and requires I have the basic knowledge and hard ware to get my work done at a decent speed and the software to accompany my daily activities.

While in my classroom, this laptop would be fun to use as I connect my projector (if a projector could be installed, that would be great), digital camera, video camera or any other device necessary to share technology through teaching with my students.

Why do we write? Is it to satisfy our emotions, or to heal our pain? Is it to express our hidden innards? Can we really mend our broken-hearts with what we desire? Or do we hold it in and let it burn us like fire? From where do we get this desire? Sometimes it makes us wonder. Why do I write? Writing if you can ever love again, does my heart yearn for more in life, or what drives me crazy, does it have anything to do with why I do it? My ups and downs sometimes can make me frown, but can the pain and agony really be gone? Do we imagine the pain leaving as we express our tragedies on the paper in front of us? Why, why, oh why!? But why not write! Use the paper as your heart and the pen as your soul and revive your mind from whatever has impaired your feelings. But is it just you imagining everything gone? So why? Is it to question what life has in store for you in the future, whether you will become what someone else had destined you to be? From time to time you have to ask yourself, why do I write?

The standards and objectives for the Alabama High School Graduation Exam, Standford Compendium Supplement, PACE, Alabama Course of Study and English Language Arts standards, are not the sole objectives to determining my long range goals and objectives for my English 9 and 11 students. I rely on these sources, as well as, my past two years teaching experience. When I became an English educator, I relied upon the Languages and Literature and Language Network textbooks, but soon found them to be only secondary sources. I have learned to incorporate a mixture of traditional and modern material within my class. Not only do the textbooks help me relay information to my students, but outside sources such as: journals, magazines, newspapers, televised productions, audible devices and most importantly, technological components. My instructional goals and objectives are mainly driven by the needs of my students. Depending on the variation of learned versus unlearned levels, my long term and short term goals may differ. Each day, I add to my lessons for the following week and this type of planning makes room for additional changes that may occur. For instance, if my lesson plan states review of grammar (subject/verb agreement) to be lectured, review and practiced on Monday and Tuesday, but on Wednesday my students have not mastered subject/verb agreement, my short term goal becomes a longer term goal at hand. By not moving on at a pace more advanced for my students, I am able to help my students become more efficient readers, writers, thinkers, listeners and speakers. I base my objectives upon their needs and abilities. I refer to modification sheets provided by special needs teachers, as well as one-on-one contact with those teachers to assist in any way possible. Additionally, I incorporate cooperative learning activities within my lessons to encourage any learner who may have difficulty grasping a particular objective being or that has been taught. I have learned that cooperative learning techniques, whether they be the Net, Power Point, Overhead or Written exercises have helped many students grasp concepts easier. Cooperative practice seemingly inspires students to accept higher order thinking, listening, writing, and speaking without withdrawing from the lessons presented. Also, resource and reinforcement materials found within the textbooks and Internet sites have proven to be useful for teaching and re-teaching concepts and skills to my students. To help students succeed at mastering the objectives discussed, I sequence all lessons from basic to complex when available to do so. I choose to go from simple to complex so each student has the opportunity to learn on their individual level. Students are able to understand that throughout each assignment taught and given, learning is taking place. Within the simplest concepts, learning is relevant. Since I teach the fundamentals of reading, i.e. phonics, affixes, suffixes, root words, pronunciation, and timed advancement students learn to develop their reading comprehension throughout all areas of curriculum. They are able to demonstrate their learned skills each day through oral and written expression. By doing this, they grasp the general idea of simple to complex skill building. In my opinion, sequencing is important because it allows each student to know why he or she is learning the material from the start. My students ask questions daily and are given positive feedback whenever uncertainty is present.

Wishing my name was Kelly Grace Gates, but issued the name Fredrica Shaketa Spivey.Life isn’t going to go the exact way we want it to, but that’s why I am in the ninth grade striving to become something in life. My life is perfectly fine the way it is, but I want to move beyond the four walls of my parents’ house and the small town life of Selma, Alabama. Being a lawyer and a singer has always been a dream of mine. I am a dream chaser not a dreamer. I think the steps that I need to make this happen is first graduate from high school, attending law school, and stay in God’s will. I am determined to leave a legacy. I have the road map; it is up to me to take the trip.

My being is more than the flesh the shrouds my body. I am a spiritual being who is clashing with that flesh for a higher calling than temporary fulfillment, short-term accomplishments and mortal acceptance.

There is more to my April 4, 1990 conception than me, Frank E. Chestnut III or my parents, Frank II and Jacinta Chestnut, although I believe I was purposely born to them, so that they could be guides, nurturers and a means of loving support. I am more than earthly achievements and attributes, but if the direction of my attention seems to completely shun the earthly, then I have unfortunately misled. For only through the earthly route can I achieve the immortal gift of the spiritual.

On this earth, I do strive for excellence: socially and personally.

My striving for social excellence entails my inter-personal relationships and just sheer interaction with people. I try to deal with people just as I would have them interact with me. Whether there is a need for a gentle explanation, patience, direct observation, honesty, fairness, justice, enlightenment, etc. I attempt to effectively and considerately interact with people regardless of our differences. I think that we, as people, are here to support and strengthen each other and if that were so, we would not naturally seek the comfort of others—other people. We are inherently social creatures and should follow Christ’s example in interacting with one another.

I equate my personal striving for excellence with the anonymous author who is quoted as saying, “My signature is a guarantee of quality.” In school, work, volunteer projects, and home, if my name is associated with it, then I insure quality. I simply believe, when nothing else can stand, our good name, full of integrity, should be able to stand alone.

Many People cry at great milestones, and I did so at the greatest of them all, my birth. I know that all babies cry, but I cried for a completely different reason. I cried because I knew that this was the beginning of never-ending endeavor of greatness. I cried because I knew that God had placed me in Timothy and Karol Purdie’s hands to shape and mold me into the person that I am today, Timothy Purdie, Jr. I am a person who has lived a typical life, but I have never been constricted to those settings. I wonder if my mother knew that while I was developing in her womb she would soon give birth to greatness. Throughout the seventeen years that I have been in existence, I have truly evolved. As aforementioned, I was born for greatness, and greatness takes time. In my earlier years, I was very introverted. From my humble beginnings at Edgewood Elementary School, excelling academically was my primary concern. Within a matter of a few years, I had formed a great reputation at the school as a great student. Despite this, I still longed to do something else.

Upon my arrival at Selma High School, I knew that I wanted to make a name for myself outside of the classroom. Selma High School Marching Band of Blue became a second family. I think that I spent just as much time at the band room as I did at home. Through this extracurricular activity, I soon learned to express myself more vividly, and I literally fell in love with music and dance. Marching band also inspired me to join the African Knights step team, of which I am currently the captain. Since this period of time in my life, I have found a way to release any pent up emotions that I could have bottled up inside of me. Most importantly, I learned to balance any other activities with my schoolwork.

As my high school years are coming to a close, I am grateful that I have begun to develop into a person that can achieve pure greatness. The beginning of my life is about to begin, and at my graduation night I will cry at my second greatest
